In Remembrance: BG Roger C. "Cliff" Poole

Remembering BG Roger C. "Cliff" Poole, former dean of the Robins School.

During his time as dean, Dr. Roger C. "Cliff" Poole contributed greatly to the Robins School's long-range planning and further enrichment of international studies. When he assumed the deanship after serving as acting dean in 1988, the Robins School had experienced four decades of growth. With his prior experience in business, government, and education, Poole was the ideal person to to address this need. 

Soon after his appointment, Poole initiated a system of long-range planning designed to optimize faculty development, which was central to his view of the future. Poole also took an important step in integrating international studies into the curriculum and undergraduate experience. Under his leadership, faculty joined the school that increased international exchange of faculty and relationships with the community, endeavors which continue today. 

Poole served as dean until 1993, when he returned to his alma mater, The Citadel, as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College. Poole was widely known for his sense of humor and compassionate nature which had a profound impact on colleagues and students. Twice he received the Distinguished Educator Award from University of Richmond. He was also the recipient of numerous honors academically and professionally. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina, receiving both an M.B.A. and Ph.D. In 1981, he received a diploma from the U.S. Army War College. Poole also completed a post-doctoral study in international finance at the London School of Economics.

Poole passed away in late 2024. He will be remembered for the impact he had on the Robins School, setting in motion programs that were beneficial to the school for many years to come.
