Study Abroad FAQs
-
How do I apply?
Robins School majors (accounting, business administration, and economics‐business) apply for study abroad using the online application found on the International Education office (IE) website.
-
How can I learn more about the study abroad application process?
All students who have declared or intend to declare a major in accounting, business administration, or economics-business are required to attend a study abroad information session for Robins School majors and the information sessions conducted by International Education (IE). Dates, times, and locations for study abroad information sessions for fall study abroad are posted on the international business programs web page, in Spiderbytes, and on TV monitors across campus. For spring study abroad, contact Nora Kostyk, business study abroad specialist, at nkostyk@richmond.edu to schedule an information session.
-
Are there any restrictions for applying to study abroad partner schools?
Yes, for most Robins School partner universities a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Your GPA for business courses you’ve completed will also be considered when making acceptance decisions.
Students applying to schools in Spain must have completed LAIS 221 Intensive Intermediate Spanish or be currently enrolled in LAIS 221 at the time of application in order to be eligible for semester or year study in Spain.
Heritage speakers and students who have met the COM2 language requirement in Spanish through the IB, AP, or Spanish placement exam are eligible to participate.
These restrictions do not apply to LALIS majors and minors.
-
Who should I contact if I have questions?
Fae Bell, fbell@richmond.edu, director of business study abroad programs, is the primary advisor for study abroad for business students.
-
When are applications due?
The deadline for fall and full-year programs is typically late January or the first week in February. The deadline for spring applications is mid- to late September. Refer to the IE website for exact dates.
-
How long does it take to find out if I have been accepted and how will I be notified?
Typically decisions are made three weeks after the application deadline; however, fall semester decisions for business students can take longer due to the size of applicant pools for fall study abroad. The host school will send out a formal letter of acceptance once the Robins School has approved your application. IE sends out acceptance packages with instructions and information.
-
What if I want to study abroad during the summer semester?
Summer study abroad programs require registration on this page.
The International Education Office website has a list of summer programs. Students wishing to take business or economics classes abroad during the summer should complete a Study Abroad Course Approval and send it to Fae Bell (fbell@richmond.edu).
- Where can I obtain a Study Abroad Course Approval Form?
-
Do I need to turn in anything in addition to the form?
Yes. For each course you list on your form, you will also need to submit a course syllabus. If you cannot obtain a syllabus, please indicate so when you submit your form.
Before submitting your form, use the Study Abroad Course Equivalency Database to view pre-approved courses. Courses listed in the database do not need to be requested for approval on the Study Abroad Course Approval Form.
-
How do I obtain approvals for the courses I list on my form?
Course approvals for business and economics courses must be obtained from Fae Bell. Approvals for courses in other fields should be listed on a separate form for non-business courses, and approvals are obtained from the appropriate chair in the School of Arts and Sciences or the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
-
Are there additional course requirements I should be aware of for study abroad?
Yes. Robins School students studying in a country where the native language is not English are required to complete the host-school’s pre-semester language course, or a regular semester language course, or a course in any subject in which the language of instruction is the local language — whether offered for credit or not.
-
Are courses taught in English?
Most partner schools offer courses in English. Consult with Fae Bell for exceptions.
-
Once I return home, how do I ensure that the courses I took abroad transferred to University of Richmond correctly?
All courses for which you received pre-approvals will appear on your UR transcript once the Registrar’s Office has received your transcript from your study abroad school. You should check BannerWeb periodically for your transfer credits. If your BannerWeb transcript shows courses taken abroad coded 999, 998, 997, etc., your transcript has been received, but the Registrar still needs an RSB course approval form on file for you. You must complete and submit the form to Fae Bell to review and approve.
