Collaborative Strategy in Action: Student–Business Partnerships at the Spider Business Hub
The Spider Business Hub’s Social Media Strategy Workshop brought together student consultants and local business owners in a structured, collaborative environment designed to address real-world challenges. Through guided discussion, analysis, and strategic planning, participants engaged in a process that emphasized both practical outcomes and experiential learning.
Among the participating business owners was Lisa D. Dance, founder of ServiceEase. With a professional background focused on identifying and resolving friction in customer experiences, Dance entered the workshop hoping to refine her social media strategy to align with both her professional voice and operational capacity. “I wanted to get back to a more balanced strategy, one that felt natural and focused on educational content,” she said.
Working alongside student consultant and sophomore Matthew Fan, Dance engaged in a detailed evaluation of her current digital presence. Fan approached the engagement with intentional curiosity. “He asked in-depth questions to understand more about my business and goals,” Dance said. Through this process, they developed a structured social media framework that incorporated defined content pillars, a manageable posting cadence, and platform-specific strategies.
Through the collaboration, “Matthew helped lighten the load on planning effective social media content for this time-crunched solopreneur,” Dance said.
In a similar engagement, Will Keck, founder of theMSQshop, approached the workshop with a different objective – to gain perspective. As he explained, “I wanted to gain an alternative view and add new tools to my creative and strategic arsenal.” Despite his extensive experience in creative project management, he recognized the value of stepping outside his usual way of thinking to further refine and strengthen his approach.
Working with student consultant and junior Michelle Hollman, Keck engaged in a process that emphasized organization and clarity. Reflecting on the experience, he noted, “Seeing everything laid out gave me more clarity and helped create space for new ideas to come in.” Rather than introducing entirely new concepts, the collaboration helped sharpen and structure his existing ideas. The workshop also provided a different type of consulting environment, one that felt, in his words, “lighter and more open, which allowed the creative process to breathe.”
For the student participants, the workshop offered a meaningful opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world context. Fan reflected on the complexity of client work, saying, “In practice, things often turn out drastically different than in theory.”
Similarly, Hollman emphasized the collaborative and dynamic nature of the experience. “Working with a real business felt more dynamic and less structured than a typical class project. There was no ‘right answer,’ and the outcomes had real implications for the client’s brand,” she said, underscoring the level of responsibility involved.
Hollman also highlighted the importance of contributing meaningful insights when working with experienced professionals. “At first, it was difficult to suggest something new, but this pushed me to think more critically and creatively.”
Across all participants, a common theme emerged: the value of perspective. As Keck reflected, “Sometimes the fresh perspective is not about completely changing the plan. Sometimes it is about helping you see your own plan more clearly.”
For both students and business owners, the workshop demonstrated the impact of collaborative problem-solving. Dance emphasized the mutual benefit of the experience, noting, “It was a win-win situation,” while also highlighting the importance of experiential learning for students working with real businesses.
Ultimately, the workshop exemplified a model in which practical outcomes and educational value intersect. Through open dialogue, structured analysis, and shared insight, participants not only developed actionable strategies but also gained a deeper understanding of how collaboration can drive meaningful progress in an evolving business landscape.
