Study Abroad
Business School Requirements and Transfer Policies
All Robins School students are encouraged to apply to study abroad. The Robins School has relationships with leading business schools worldwide.
Eligibility & GPA Requirements
- Preference is given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and at least two semesters in residence at the University of Richmond.
Approved Programs & Credit Transfer
- Credits will only transfer from partner institutions or pre-approved study abroad programs.
- Students who study at a non-business partner school may transfer only one business or one economics course.
- Specific course availability abroad is not guaranteed. Plan ahead and be flexible!
Course Load & Credit Transfer
- You must enroll in 3.5 (minimum) to 5.5 (maximum) Richmond units while abroad.
- Grade requirement: Courses must be completed with a grade equivalent of a University of Richmond “C” or better to be eligible for transfer. Abroad courses graded on a pass/fail basis are not transferable.
- Course credits must convert to at least 0.77 Richmond units to count toward a Robins major or concentration.
Course credit and grade conversion details are available on the Gateway Abroad Center for Global Engagement brochure pages for each partner school.
International Requirement Fulfillment
Good news! Studying abroad for a full semester through an approved study abroad program fulfills the international-focused business or economics elective degree requirement. Note: no course credit.
IBUS 387 Cultural Awareness
- All Robins students abroad are automatically enrolled in IBUS 387 – Cultural Awareness (.25 units, pass/fail).
- We will share course details with students before they return to campus.
Course Transfer Credit Approvals
Business & Economics Courses:
- Must be approved by the Business Study Abroad Programs office.
- Submit a course approval form before registering.
- Get approval from the appropriate department chair in:
- School of Arts & Sciences, or
- Jepson School of Leadership Studies
A course approval form is not required if the course is listed in the Study Abroad Course Equivalency database of preapproved courses for transfer credit.
Approval of transfer credit does not mean a student has the necessary course prerequisites. Students are responsible for ensuring they meet the background and prerequisites of the study abroad host institution. The student should consult with the assigned advisor at the host school.
Language Requirement
- Students studying in a non-English-speaking country must complete one of the following while abroad:
- Pre-semester language crash course
